Reflection of Semester 2 2013-2014
How the world works
|
Students continued to learn about materials changing at this unit. The central idea is “The fact that materials can undergo permanent or temporary changes poses challenges and provides benefits for society and the environment”.
As provocation, students were encouraged to observe 2 different objects and predict the changes happened on it. They were tomato fruit and tomato sauce, candle, rice-cooked rice, cheese and milk, etc. They observed and gave their thoughts afterward. It was a very engaging learning experiences as students showed their curiosity and were being thinkers in explaining their predictions. We also conducted a class experiment (cooking rice) and write down the observation on the change that has happened (Students record their observation with scientific method in journal. It is done to develop students’ research skills and be used to use scientific method. Form, Function and Responsibility were the key concepts of this unit. By understanding of the forms of matter, their properties and change in the states of matter due to change in temperatures so students will comprehend about how materials can be changed. They also developed a sense of responsibility towards society and environments when they viewed videos on manufacturing process and during the field trip to tiles manufacturing unit, regarding their impact on society and environment. Students continued to explore the characteristics of changing materials and analyze ways materials changed by doing class experiment (Heating-Mixing-Burning). This experiment made students aware of the reversible and irreversible changes. They also learnt to differentiate chemical/physical changes after exploring some materials provided at school and students brought from home. |

How We Express Ourselves
Peoples outward appearance can lead to perception and misconception was the central idea of this unit. After having provocation, students had discussion using landforms about teachers appearances. There was one teacher who dressed up using pajama and some students were being open minded about teacher’s appearance as long as teacher still gave the best performances. As follow activity, students were encouraged to be inquirers by asking their family membersw or neighbor about the ways they dress up and what reasons behind their decision to dress up differently.
Students also had a dress up day where they had to show their identity and let their friends to give the perceptions or even misconceptions. To explore how cultures may have certain expectations how to act and dress and the way this may differ according to private and public contexts, we invited a native Asmat person to be the guest speaker. He informed us about the way they dress up and also their adornment. Talk to the pictures For the summative assessment, students will prepare pictures collection of certain tribe/culture/nation/people/community outward appearances and adornments. The students will also gather data using CLAIM, SUPPORT, QUESTION and then countering misconception happened both oral and written. The students must show evidence and strong reason of their perspective. |
