PYP Exhibition 2013
HOW TO START PYP EXHIBITION
PYP Exhibition is a significant event of PYP schools and students to synthesize five essential elements that they have been learning and share it to the whole community. It is also a final assessment that PYP students must complete before they go to next level of study.
We used trans-disciplinary “How We Organize Ourselves” with the central idea “Governmental systems and decisions can promote or deny equal opportunities and social justices.” Students, parents, mentors, and teachers were working on the Exhibition projects within ten weeks which started from January 14th – March 28th 2013. The time table of exhibition had a clear target needs to be achieved every week. G5 teachers also informed it weekly to parents, mentors and students.
As introduction to the exhibition, Grade 5 teachers invited G5 parents to have briefing about process and result of Exhibition. Parents were informed about the purposes, roles, central idea, issues, and challenge of the exhibition projects. This year, parents were more involved than before. They had the roles to take students to do fieldtrip, action and decorating booth display. Alhamdulillah, most parents gave their best support and effort.
Mentors who are PYP teachers were briefed during PYP sharing session to have discussion about roles of mentors and process of exhibition. The mentors were given questionnaires about their interest topic to match it with students’ interest. There was a slight change in the grouping mentors which we have one mentor leader who are senior teachers that capable to lead and direct other mentors. Every mentor leader has responsibilities to make sure each mentor collaborated, monitor the process of exhibition and report it to G5 teachers.
The same way was done for students as they were introduced to the central idea and lines of inquiry of the exhibition unit Students were encouraged to find facts and explore current issues that have relation with the central idea. They were interviewed one by one to get deeper investigation about their interests. Then, they were grouped based on the same interest.
PROCESS OF EXHIBITION
In the first week of Exhibition, students were introduced to central idea and then continues to have "Wondering and Musing" to have a deeper understanding. Then, they explored current issues that are related with central idea. Many of them already got an overview about what kind of topic they wanted to investigate. G5 teachers continued to interview students one by one to identify their interest in this exhibition project. Students that have the same interest were grouped and assigned to do exhibition project together.
After having the group, students will start to have mentor meetings and go further to discuss and continue their investigation.
